World War II, in my opinion, is the most interesting subject of the 20th century. It has changed the world in so many ways from the first shots to the nuclear age. The war took millions of lives and changed the generations for years to come. Books are one of the important pieces to preserve history. Here are five of the most interesting WW2 books that I find fascinating.
Other Losses by James Bacque
Other Losses is a 1989 book that talks about the camps that Eisenhower controlled after World War II. Around one million Germans surrendered to the Allies on the African front, Italian front, and the Western Front. The book claimed that 1.1 million Germans starved to death and died from diseases roaming all over the camp. This book is an investigation into the deaths of Germans Prisoners Of War after ww2.
After The Reich by Giles MacDough
After Germany collapsed in 1945, it was divided into 4 different zones by France, the United States of America, the Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom. This book documents the Germans who had to flee the country from both sides. These civilians struggled to survive in a war-torn city and civilians even starved to death.
Beyond Evil and Tyranny by R.H.S Stoli
This book documents Hitler’s involvement in World War 1 and his involvement in politics which involves Antisemitic beliefs before his reign to power. The author also talks about the rise of communism within the Weimar Republic and how the Bolsheviks were influencing the communist party. Hitler believed that his country was collapsing because of communism.
Stalin’s War by Sean McMeekin
This book mainly talks about the Eastern front during WW2. It covers many infamous battles such as the Battle of Stalingrad, the Siege of Leningrad, and the Battle of Kiev, Ukraine. The author argued that Stalin did not treat his soldiers well with orders 227 and 270. The author also talks about Stalin’s war crimes of which were never covered in history books such as the Katyn Forest Massacre.
The Young Hitler I Knew by August Kubizek
Before Hitler controlled Germany in 1933, Hitler had a friend by the name of August Kibizek who talked about Hitler’s involvement in art and how he was Catholic. He mainly talks about his personality and how he behaved towards other people. This book is a biography of Adolf Hitler by his friend who was always on his side during his school years.
